MØ – Waste of Time
I was checking out ex-Voice contestant Abi Sampa’s twitter page (the one with the awesome Raga vocals), and she had this tune on her photo/video section. Around the 40 second mark my eyes and ears are in full-on sexy mode, this is the kinda song I’ve been waiting to hear all of my life. I listened to it around 50 times in about 4 days, and it currently has 105 plays on my iTunes. It is my favourite song of the year, nothing even comes close. If my ears were capable of orgasm, this would do it. Listen to it with headphones.
James Vincent McMorrow – Cavalier
The first single to be taken from his upcoming album ‘Post Tropical’, due for release early next year. Cavalier is a sonic departure from his debut album ‘Early in the Morning’. Which is a beautiful album. It’s raw, minimal and slowly builds to a climax. I quickly became obsessed with the tune. His vocals are undeniably impressive, which I commended him for publicly…. and he responded!
James Vincent McMorrow – Red Dust
McMorrow double whammy! The 2nd single from the album, and it’s another corker. In fact, I think I love it more than Cavalier. If the rest of the album is as good as these two singles, I’m already looking at one of my favourite albums of 2014.
Disclosure – Latch ft. Sam Smith
It’s rare that I A: listen to the radio, B: If I’m listening to the radio don’t know what song is on. In this case however, I didn’t. I shazamed that mutha and this was the result. Euphoria and elation are the words I would use to describe this song.
Henry Green – Electric Feel (Gespleu Edit)
Electric Feel is my MGMT song, and one of my all-time favourite tunes. I first came across a remix by Kygo on Hype Machine, which gave it a chilled house feel. Fell in love with it instantly, and then came across the Gespleu edit. As soon the tone kicked in without the beats, I literally said something like ‘OH MY GOD’ or ‘OH DAMNNN’ out loud. It’s heaven. Check out Henry Green on Soundcloud, I want to crawl up into a ball and live in his music.
Lorde – Royals
It freaks me out that Lorde (real name Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor) was only 16 years old when Royals was released, how can someone be that young and have such lyrical maturity? To think that she could have a decade long career and still be younger than me. She made chart history with the single, and has earned herself four Grammy nominations in the process. Bravo. Even though I think the Grammys are a joke…
James Blake – Retrograde
I didn’t get along too well with James Blake’s eponymous debut, I just couldn’t grasp the sparsity. After randomly coming across the video to Retrograde early this year, and checking out the album, I’ve warmed up to him a fair bit. It’s the chorus that does it for me, all those tense layers and his haunting vocals harmonise it something that sounds so final.
Lady Gaga – Applause
It’s no surprise that I love Gaga, but after the dark, agenda-riddled ‘Born This Way‘ I wasn’t sure what angle she was going for. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. On first listen I was very aware that she was attempting some David Bowie-esque vocals on the verses. As soon as the house-like chorus kicked in though, I was like ‘YESSSSS’. It’s hyper, catchy and so exciting, I can’t help but bust a move. My favourite Gaga song, and one of 2013’s highlights. I just wish I didn’t hate the accompanying video.
Kanye West – On Sight
Daft Punk produced ‘On Sight’ is the opener to Yeezus, one of my fav records of 2013. As soon as you press play you’re like WTF. It’s straight in your face, leary, crude Yeezy. It’s that tempo, those beats, synths, everything. Play it loud.
AlunaGeorge – You Know You Like It
To be honest, I can’t quite describe why I enjoy this song so much. It’s sounds spacey and a bit empty, the lyrics are kinda cool and simple. I dunno, there’s something really sexy about it.

The Weeknd – Professional
Can’t believe I forgot to add this!! Taken from The Weeknd’s 2nd album ‘Kiss Land’, Professional is the opening and best track. I had this on repeat for weeks.

Natalia Kills – Saturday Night
I completely forgot about this tune! I’m really not into Natalia Kills, she comes across as a wannabe/try hard to me. I think she’s a pretty good sharped-tongued lyricist, but apart from that I’ve yet to see anything talented about her as an artist. This was the tune that made me finally switch on to her a bit, those deep Del Rey-esque vocals, the heavy beat and the general tempo of the song marry together excellently. It should have been a really big hit this year.

Grizzly Bear – Will Calls (Diplo remix)
Another one I forgot about, a tune by New York band Grizzly Bear. A band which you might not recognise by name, but you may have heard of already, and didn’t know. Seen that YouView TV advert where the TV is being taken back through the days?, and the lyrics “make it eeeeassssyyy, wooooooaaahhh” – that’s ‘Two Weeks’ by Grizzly Bear. That and this, is my introduction to them. They’re awesome, keep listening.
Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop
I can’t help but love this, it’s so debaucherous and carefree. It carries that we-don’t-give-a-f*** party vibe attitude. In an alter-ego sort of way, I imagine myself with one of those big red American cups, in a sweaty, poorly lit room grinding on a giant teddy bear. What dreams are made of.
